The disappointing news of LucasArts‘ demise has spread like wildfire on the internet, offering old memories and new frustration over the news of the cancellation of games that have been in the process of development. Star Wars 1313 was a highly anticipated title that was believed to successfully expand upon the massive world that Star Wars has to offer, but news of its cancellation has also been spreading around the web.
Apparently, though, Star Wars 1313 could be salvaged.
Game Informer interviewed a representative from LucasFilm that revealed that some of the company’s projects in development, including Star Wars 1313, might have a future after all.
“All of these things happened at once. Naturally, as any company that goes through a big announcement like this, you have to look through your whole portfolio and realign some things. 1313 was looking fantastic, the reception has been great. Our other unannounced titles are fine, it just got to a point where from a business standpoint we couldn’t continue developing those internally and keep up with the direction that the company was going.”
Kotaku reported that 150 LucasArts employees have been laid off, also stating what people already assumed: games like Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313 have been canceled. But in the midst of the job losses, the company is also evaluating options, and could possibly license out these games to external development and publishing partners.
“It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we’re just looking at different models rather than internal production… They’re evaluating everything. There’s always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing.”
I cannot express how depressing it is to hear of even more layoffs in the industry, but I hope that all of the work put into 1313 is not wasted. I would love to eventually see this game on the shelves! What are your thoughts of LucasArts‘ demise? Do you think these layoffs will eventually ruin the industry?
