Grand Theft Auto is expanding in a pretty huge way, adding a huge multiplayer experience to accompany the highly anticipated open-world atmosphere. Rockstar Games released a video teasing Grand Theft Auto Online, launching October 1st and free with copies of Grand Theft Auto V. Unlike the multiplayer experience of GTA IV, this offers much more than running oblivious players over at the airport.
The online component features a “dynamic and persistent online world” that can host up to 16 players. Similar to massively multiplayer online games, GTA Online will allow players to either work alone or with friends to complete missions and participate in random activities. The game “takes the fundamental Grand Theft Auto concepts of freedom, ambient activity, and mission-based gameplay and makes them available to multiple players in an incredibly detailed and responsive online world.”
In addition with traditional game modes, players can earn money and reputation by completely jobs. With this money, players can unlock customization opportunities that can change the look of your character and even buy things such as apartments to invite friends to or a garage to showcase your favorite vehicles. But what excites me is the emphasis on the free roam, allowing players to also enjoy things outside of jobs and just aimlessly driving around and creating chaos.
Remember when I joked about combining The Sims and Grand Theft Auto? Yeah that still sounds pretty awesome to me. And while everything is still pure GTA, I love the personal touches that players can make in order to create a unique experience. But the customization doesn’t stop there. Player created content is possible now, allowing players to create their own races and games, and share them with friends. Or players can hop in other player-made content.
Grand Theft Auto V was already a must-have game… but now I’m not sure how much longer I can actually wait for it to be released. I need it now!
