J.K. Rowling Regrets Ron and Hermione Relationship

2010 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (25)

In comments obtained by The Sunday Times, J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, admitted that she regrets putting Ron and Hermione in a relationship. In an interview that was conducted by Emma Watson, the author revealed that she should have put Hermione and Harry together instead. “I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

She continued, “I know, I’m sorry. I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

In the interview, Emma Watson answered back with her own agreement. “I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.”

Rowling added that Ron and Hermione would have needed relationship counseling.

As someone who is getting into the Harry Potter universe a tad bit late, I admit that I wanted to see Harry and Hermione together in the beginning. Ron was always too awkward for me, despite how cute and charming it made him. Maybe that was because I tended to relate myself to the Hermione character, but I couldn’t find a good match between them, at least until later in the series, and especially in the movies.

In a comment on Hypable, one person gave another opinion that I can’t help but agree with as well. “Personally, I’m glad that Harry and Hermione didn’t end up together because it went against the overused literary trope that the main hero always gets the leading lady. It gives us lonely Rons in the world a little bit of hope.”

This comes as more bad news to the Ron character considering J.K. Rowling initially considered killing him off altogether, a fact that was revealed in an interview conducted by Daniel Radcliffe. “Funnily enough, I planned from the start that none of them would die. Then midway through, which I think was a reflection that I wasn’t in a very happy place, I starting thinking I might punish one of them off. Out of sheer spite.”

  1. I think Ron and Hermione were a wonderful couple! They were opposites but shared core values like loyalty and fighting for what is right. The crowd burst into applause when they finally kissed. Leave it the happy ended.
