I’m not a huge MMO fan. I try so incredibly hard to be, but my interest in them always seems to fade away after an initial “honeymoon stage.” This review is coming from someone who doesn’t have a whole lot of experience when it comes to MMOs, but I hope that this will draw you to a game that I enjoy.
Conquer Online is a free-to-play MMORPG that revolves around a spectacular vision of Ancient China. Filled with Chinese lore and mythology, it’s easy to get soaked up into the world and music. The world in itself is beautiful and fun to explore, and the mobs of different leveled monsters are fun to blast through.
One of the beauties about Conquer Online is its simplicity as far as storytelling goes. Your hero will go on multiple quests to level up, running errands and slaying monsters in order to help NPCs. However, there is no depth to the stories told, and no emotional attachment to the quests. The stories and dialogue simply act as filler to achieve experience. While this normally aggravates me (I love thick storytelling in games), it’s a nice omission.
There are numerous classes to choose from:
Pirate: Pirates specialize in Rapier and Pistol weapons, allowing the player to shift back and forth between melee and distant combat, something not many classes truly allow. The changes of items being dropped doubles when Pirates kill other players, and they earn only 5 PK (player killing) points every time they slay another player.
Monk/Saint: Male players can be monks while female players can be saints, a class that focuses on quick martial arts combat, using Prayer Beads as weapons. Because of their dedication to spiritual powers, monks/saints can relieve teammates of adverse statuses. They can be priceless when teaming up since they can give teammates various attributes.
Ninja: Ninjas are the fastest class, carrying devastating attacks, but they contain the lowest health and defense. Players who choose a ninja class will want to learn how to be stealth and quick-moving in combat. Weapons can include normal swords, clubs, and blades, but ninjas can also equip katanas which are exclusive to the class. In addition, ninjas can use a selection of ranged attacks which can be deadly to other classes.
Archer: Archers are a purely ranged class, and one of the best classes to use as power levelers. One major advantage archers carry over other classes is the ability to fly and attack multiple targets with their arrows. Because of this, earning gold and item drops is easier.
Trojan: Trojans are pure melee fighters who carry the ability to dual-wield various weapons such as swords and clubs. They can be a frightening opponent in PvP with their high attacks.
Warrior: Warriors tend to be tanky characters with their heavy armor and their ability to equip shields for bonus defense. They can use almost any weapon (except for bows and backswords). Their “Superman” XP skill is deadly. When activated, it causes a death blow with its heightened damage, a perfect tool to use when sweeping through mobs of monsters.
Taoist: Taoists are essentially mages who harness powerful magic attacks such as lightning. At level 40, Taoists can choose between becoming a Fire Taoist or Water Taoist. Fire focuses on damage while Water focuses on healing, both essential in combat. Water Taoists are the height of spiritual enlightment and have lower requirements for quests because of their wisdom.
Assassin: A brand new class to the game, the Oriental Assassin is the secret identity of Archers. Once equipped with a throwing knife, an Archer will become an assassin and earn the ability to launch quick attacks from a distance. Archers can transform into Assassins at level 40.
Leveling, especially in the beginning, is nearly painless. In fact, it’s almost too easy, which may be a turn off to veteran MMO players who enjoy a challenging level grind. However, the impact of experience points does begin to fade around the level 50 mark, and considering players can level up to 120… it’s obvious that lots of hours can be put into leveling. At 120, you can choose to be Reborn, a symbolism of reincarnation in the game which allows players to choose a brand new class to level up with while still retaining knowledge and skills from their previous class choice.
An exception to the 120 rule is the Water Taoist who can choose to become Reborn at level 110. This way, the game becomes highly replayable, and adding new skills and powers will obviously strengthen your hero even more, which comes in handy with Guild Wars, Arena, and general PK moments.
What’s interesting is the fact that once the cycle is done again, you can choose to go through a Second Rebirth!
Conquer Online’s world is spacial and open with lots of mobs littering the world. There are different Zones that you will explore, each one containing a set level of different monsters to kill. At first glance, the urge to randomly begin exploring may not be there, but there is a ton of beautiful oriental features to find, and with the litters of different monsters occupying different zones, there is an undeniable sense of danger. It can be easy to accidentally run into a mob of high-leveled beasts that can slay with one hit.
PvP is where Conquer Online shines. There are numerous tournaments that players can join in order to earn rare prizes such as Team PK (Player Kill) tournaments, Weekly and Monthly PK wars, Class PK Wars, Extreme PK Tournament, Arena, Clan War, Team Qualifier, Capture the Flag, etc. There are no in-game penalties in these organized games.
Open world PK, however, makes the world much more dangerous. There are four PK modes to choose from: PK, Team, Peace, and Capture.
PK: You will be able to attack monsters and all other players.
Team: Slay monsters and other players not in your current team or guild.
Peace: You can only slay monsters. You can’t attack other players.
Capture: You can slay monsters as normal, but you can also attack known criminals (murderer players with blue or black names).
If you willingly begin PKing other players, you’ll begin obtaining PK Points. If you obtain high enough points, your name will turn red or black, allowing other players to kill you to obtain a bounty.
Black Name players will also be arrested and taken to the PK Jail when killed. From there, you will have to either pay the warden 500,000 silver to be released or wait until your PK points decline.
I personally always keep my setting on Capture just in case someone tries to kill me for gold or item drops.
Having a social life in Conquer is extremely easy thanks to all of it’s social events. Players can trade and sell items in the Market, interact in a Mentor System which provides rewards, get married, build a house, join and make guilds, and clans. Social interaction will no doubt make your experience much more fulfilling, and it’s always more fun to play with friends!
The number one downside to Conquer is the presence of micro-transactions. It is ultimately a Free-to-Play game, however, there is most definitely a pay-to-win opportunity. Paying for CP (Conquer Points) will allow you to obtain a different currency that can’t be found in drops, and it will make it easier to obtain rare items such as Dragonballs.
However, there are numerous players who play purely f2p, and the price options for CP are extremely affordable and rewarding for anyone who feels the urge to shell out some cash.
Overall, Conquer Online is a thriving world full of beauty and experience that can keep you entertained for hours on end. Because there are so many things to do, people may feel overwhelmed at first, but if you take the time to learn about the world and the system, Conquer can easily become one of the most in-depth MMO games ever created. With constant updates and new events, there is always something fresh to participate in.
There are so many other things to do that haven’t been mentioned here. I advise you to download the game and try it out for yourself!
