Legendary Pictures has officially greenlit the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s film Pacific Rim, which is slated to hit theaters April 7, 2017. It has previously been reported that del Toro was working on a script with Zak Penn, and it has also been revealed that original co-writer Travis Beacham was also collaborating with the two.
“The characters I love will return,” del Toro spoke with BuzzFeed. “Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau– but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
While the first film initially performed poorly at the box office, it managed to obtain 75% of its worldwide gross in the international market. Fans of the first are no doubt ecstatic to discover news of a sequel, but even more is in store for Pacific Rim. A new animated series has been mentioned, and plans to drop sometime before the sequel. The series will take place in the Pacific Rim universe, and will be distributed in the U.S. by Universal Pictures.
